Daniel informs Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2:30, “But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me for any wisdom residing in me more than in any other living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.” (NASB) Daniel’s comments here are by way of introducing the interpretation to the king. More importantly, Daniel makes it clear that he is not the one who could reveal the dream nor its interpretation. He states he has not been given the means of the dream or its interpretation due to any wisdom he may have. In so doing, Daniel again is humbly giving full reverence to God as the author and interpreter of the dream. Daniel is basically saying that he is merely the messenger of the dream and its interpretation.

One thing we must remember is that both Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel are merely the characters of the scene before us. A simple illustration could be when we watch a movie. The actors are the characters that “act out” the contents of the film. Their role is crucial for our understanding of the film. Many films are based on a book by an author that is turned into a screenplay [the script] that becomes the finished article [a film release]. In a similar way, as we read the book of Daniel we are watching the film in our mind’s eye. We will see many actors in the film and right now our focus is on Daniel standing before Nebuchadnezzar telling him that the knowledge and the interpretation of the dream [the script] have not been authored by him but by God alone. In our verse under discussion, Daniel is pressing home the fact that the dream was simply a vehicle God used in divine revelation in this instance to Nebuchadnezzar. As we have already noted, in His Providence, God had selected Nebuchadnezzar as the recipient of this revelation and Daniel as its interpreter.

We have mentioned previously why God chose Nebuchadnezzar to receive the dream and its interpretation. Can we glean any additional reasons why this was so?

Let us look at this king again. He is certainly known as the greatest king of Babylon who succeeded his father Nabopolassar. It was his father who had liberated Babylonia from the Assyrians, which created a stable base for Nebuchadnezzar to grow from. His marriage to Amytis of Media [who was either the daughter or granddaughter of Cyaxerxes, the king of the Medes] secured a strong alliance with the Medes. In his inaugural address to the god Marduk, he claimed he had built a house that would endure forever. His defeat of the Egyptians, the Assyrians, together with subduing Palestine and the region of Syria, consolidated his power. He controlled all the trade routes across Mesopotamia from the Persian Gulf to the Mediterranean Sea. For reasons only known to God, He specifically chose Nebuchadnezzar as the one to receive knowledge of future events. This shows that no matter how powerful a person may think they are, they are still under the commands and direction of God. Seen as being the most powerful man on earth at the time of his dream, it shows the almighty power of God that no one can match or usurp. His will and purpose supersedes any and all plans man thinks they have. Nebuchadnezzar had no choice in the matter. He was merely a player in the process. The revelation did involve Nebuchadnezzar as the leader of one of the world powers that would be revealed in the dream. Not to get ahead of ourselves but later in the book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar would also experience being humbled by God in recognizing God was all powerful. Other than these events, much of the dream and its interpretation never impacted Nebuchadnezzar. That, in and of itself, tells us the message lays out God’s plans and purposes. It is He alone who controls man’s entire history. Sinful, fallen men think they are rightful rulers of their countries and the earth. Yet, they are mere spectators in the process and have no control over what God will accomplish.

We could also ask why God did not use an angel as the messenger of the interpretation. As we know, Nebuchadnezzar worshipped false gods, in particular, the god Marduk. Had an angel been sent by God he may have reasoned his false god had provided the dream and its interpretation. By using Daniel, a Jew, as His messenger God was revealing His favor not only on Daniel but, more importantly, showing Nebuchadnezzar that He was the true God of the universe. What was about to be revealed to Nebuchadnezzar would be prophecies of some things yet to take place during the king’s lifetime but, moreover, far more after his death. The future portion of this interpretation may also not occur during our own lifetime, but it will be fulfilled at a day and time of God’s choosing.

Let us take the time to explore deeper what Daniel meant when he told Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 2:28a, “However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days.” (NASB) [Underline in Scripture mine]. We already know Daniel declared that it was Almighty God who reveals mysteries and it was He who had made known what Nebuchadnezzar desperately wanted to find out. Our focus in this passage is “what will take place in the latter days”. More specifically, we want to know what is meant by these “latter days” that Daniel refers to and what they represent? Also, what period of time does it include?

These are valid and important questions as we travel through Daniel, to understand what each part of the dream and, more importantly, its interpretation, means. When we get into the dream I hope you enjoy the ride because we effectively become time travelers with what is revealed. Remember, neither Nebuchadnezzar nor Daniel had any idea whom the dream was referring to. Even though Daniel gave the king the interpretation of the dream he still did not specifically name who was meant in the interpretation because he did not know. I make this point only because we do know who the interpretation was referring to because of the benefit of standing on the side of history looking back. In other words, the portion that has already taken place (as in history) is what we have seen (by means of historical record). We also know, by God’s Word, what is revealed in the portion of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream that is still yet to be fulfilled (future). We should realize how fortunate we are to be living at a time when we know more of this dream and interpretation than Nebuchadnezzar or Daniel ever did.

The portion of this verse “latter days” is the literal translation. When one looks at the Aramaic, together with the equivalent phrase in the Old Testament, we note the expression denotes the future. That being said, we still have to arrive when the exact time of the future occurs, and we can only achieve that by means of the context. What I mean by that is that, although the Aramaic word used in the text for latter is acharith, this word, with its equivalent phrase in the Old Testament, has different time elements in describing the future. Let me explain. A survey of several verses clearly refers to an eschatological time frame [which simply means a branch of theology concerned with the final events in the history of the world or of humankind]. However, several other verses speak of events in the nearer future.

Isaiah 2:1-5 is eschatological as it speaks of the future kingdom of Christ. The passage reads, “The word which Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the Lord Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. And many peoples will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, To the house of the God of Jacob; That He may teach us concerning His ways And that we may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from Zion And the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. And He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war. Come, house of Jacob, and let us walk in the light of the Lord.” (NASB) (cf. Micah 4:1-5; Ezekiel 38:14-23; Daniel 10:14)

In Genesis 49:1 we are told, “Then Jacob summoned his sons and said, “Assemble yourselves that I may tell you what will befall you in the days to come.” (NASB  This was clearly something that was to happen in the near future during the time of Jacob blessing his sons which will play out further in God’s promises at the end times. (cf. Numbers 24:14; Deuteronomy 31:29; Jeremiah 30:24; 48:47; 49:39)

As we move further into Daniel chapter two it will reveal to us that the Daniel 2:28 reference to the “latter days” clearly involves the eschatological future time frame. But, rather than spoil those events here, we will read them later. Suffice it to say, the events refer to four empires (who are all part of the Gentile times) that appear before the coming kingdom of God. Three of those kingdoms have come and gone. The fourth kingdom’s prominence has also gone but it was never truly defeated. In that sense, there is still a continuance of that kingdom until the end of the Gentile times. I promise you, I will explain this concept to your satisfaction when we arrive at the passages that lays out the details of this kingdom. Despite what we hear in our world today of worldwide dominance by a nation or nations based upon their standing armies, or what nuclear deterrents they hold, there is no worldwide Gentile kingdom in Scripture between the time of this fourth kingdom to the end of the Gentile times. Therefore, from a Biblical perspective, we are still in the era of this fourth kingdom, as detailed in Daniel 2:40-44.

Daniel is now before King Nebuchadnezzar. We read in Daniel 2:26-28, “The king said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither wise men, conjurers, magicians nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed.” (NASB) Daniel informs us here that he had been introduced by Arioch and likely was presented to the king by the Babylonian name he had been given. So he is announced to the king as Belteshazzar. This order you will recall was the king’s and was carried out by Ashpenaz in Daniel 1:7. So we are simply reading Daniel speaking of himself and being addressed as Belteshazzar before the court. Nebuchadnezzar asks Daniel if he can first tell him the content of his dream and then its interpretation. The inference here is that Nebuchadnezzar may have lost any hope that anyone could know the contents of his dream. Again, I and others do not necessarily believe that Nebuchadnezzar had forgotten his dream but used that as a test to ensure the wise men were telling the truth.

As Daniel answers the king I think for a brief moment, as he hears Daniel’s reply, he may have thought Daniel was going to say the same things as the wise men. Daniel does, in part, but with a twist. Daniel tells the king, in effect, that what the wise men had said was partly true. No wise men, conjurers, magicians, or diviners could tell him the content of his dream. If you did not realize the significance of this statement then re-read the sentence. Daniel is actually rebuking the king for his impossible and unjust decree. The wise men had no way of knowing so they were speaking the truth when they said they could not possibly know the dream. Daniel confirms this to be the case. Imagine the scene for a moment. It would not be hard for us to imagine Nebuchadnezzar begin to immediately think the same of Daniel as he did of the wise men. Except, for the next word out of Daniel’s mouth.

Most English translations use the word “But” as the next word Daniel says. The word in the original text is beram which is Aramaic and is defined as “however” which is what the NASB uses. Equally, and perhaps because this Aramaic word has an uncertain derivation, the use of the word “nevertheless” has also been used to echo what Daniel said.

Any of the three words would suffice for Daniel is immediately making a statement by the use of “But”, “However”, or “Nevertheless” that there is one who knows the contents of the dream and its interpretation and Daniel is quick to reveal who that person is. The next three things Daniel says are remarkable as he is face to face with the most powerful ruler on earth!

  1. Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.

Here Daniel is separating truth from falsehood. He is putting Nebuchadnezzar on notice that it is only a God in heaven that is able to tell him the content of his dream. Why? Because God put that dream there. He was the author of it.

  1. Daniel tells Nebuchadnezzar that God has made known to Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days.

Now, while this has significance for Nebuchadnezzar during his lifetime the greater majority of those latter days would not. Many of those things (in latter days) to take place would happen thousands of years later and some are still yet to occur. So, while this dream is given to Nebuchadnezzar he is merely an instrument that God used to reveal the time of the Gentiles, its duration and what would happen thereafter. Importantly, built within that timeframe, the Messiah would also appear.

  1. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed.

Here Daniel is about to reveal the contents of the dream and its interpretation. In Daniel 2:29 we have its specific reference. This Scripture reads, “As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts turned to what would take place in the future; and He who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will take place.” (NASB)

Simply put, Nebuchadnezzar’s dream only partly affects him personally. All the events are future from that time stamp. Some of the events would occur in his lifetime but, as we study Daniel further, many more would occur long after Nebuchadnezzar had lived. Daniel then tells Nebuchadnezzar that God had chosen to reveal those things to Nebuchadnezzar.

We will speak more on Daniel’s description of the latter days in these verses when we return.

Arioch, you will recall, was Nebuchadnezzar’s captain of the bodyguard. After giving praises and blessings to God we now see Daniel on his way to meet Arioch. Daniel 2:24-25 tells us, “Therefore, Daniel went in to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon; he went and spoke to him as follows: “Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon! Take me into the king’s presence, and I will declare the interpretation to the king.” Then Arioch hurriedly brought Daniel into the king’s presence and spoke to him as follows: “I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who can make the interpretation known to the king!” (NASB) Verse twenty-four is the verse that I, and others, believe indicates that the wise men had not yet been executed.

Simply reading these two verses without taking serious notice loses the impact and the scene before us. Daniel appears to have had free access to approach Arioch. This, again, could indicate that Daniel already had some form of relationship with Arioch. That relationship was likely based on the respect Daniel had obtained over the past three years. It is very interesting when we read that Daniel tells Arioch not to destroy the wise men. Here I believe is another example of the two knowing each other. Remember, Arioch is tasked not just to arrest all of the wise men, but it is he who is to carry out their executions. Full compliance with the king’s order was not a choice but was expected, or he himself would face death. Had Daniel not had any relationship with Arioch one would be able to argue that Arioch would have thought “who is this young upstart telling me (in effect) what to do in countermanding the king’s orders?”  But Daniel’s confidence tells us something else. It tells us that Daniel knew the interpretation was accurate and had complete confidence in God. Daniel had no fear of telling Arioch, in effect, to stop the king’s order immediately. Daniel by then knew that he had been chosen by God. He did not know that by revealing the interpretation, not only would that save their lives but also the wise men under sentence of death and in so doing would be rewarded for revealing the dream and the interpretation. He and his three fellow Hebrews had one simple desire which was to faithfully serve their God. Whoever taught them in the first place in their homeland had taught them well. Little did their teachers know how well, until events unfolded.

Daniel then tells Arioch to take him into the king’s presence in order for him to reveal the interpretation. This sentence not only shows the urgency but the order from Daniel. This is not so much of a request but more of a demand. Daniel speaks confidently this way not only because it is going to glorify God, but Daniel, evidently, was also acutely interested in not wanting any of the wise men destroyed. They may have been occultists and steeped in idolatry but that did not stop Daniel showing compassion toward them. That should be a lesson for us today. How many of us can honestly admit that we have compassion for those who ignore, reject, or blaspheme God? How many of us feel angry or, dare I say, hatred for those who claim they are Christians but vilify God by their heresies? Thankfully, in general, we live in a time period of relative freedom as to our Christian beliefs but during the establishment of the Protestant Reformation things were quite different and atrocities were carried out by many sides. But Daniel was truly honoring and obeying what Jesus would later refer to as the second greatest commandment. Jesus had, in fact, been asked what the most important commandment was. In Mark 12:29-31, “Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” (NASB) As Christians, we should NEVER look upon those who are lost with anger, hatred, or contempt. Rather, we are to love such ones, however difficult that may seem.

Verse twenty-five is interesting in its explanation of Arioch’s actions. Many, if not all, of us, have displayed the same action of wanting to be acknowledged when perhaps we were not the real recipient of such honor. Arioch hurriedly brought Daniel into the presence of the king. This would imply that Arioch had no desire to execute any of those whom Nebuchadnezzar had ordered to be put to death either, but neither does he side with the wise men. In fact, he specifically tells the king that it is one of the Judeans who can reveal the interpretation thus disassociating himself from suggesting he received any information from those whom Nebuchadnezzar had dismissed as frauds. But here is where Arioch exaggerates the facts. He tells Nebuchadnezzar that he has found a man among the exiles of Judah who can reveal the interpretation of the dream. We were told in the previous verse that Daniel went to him, not the other way around! Now he appears to be trying to take the credit for saving the wise men and finding Daniel who could reveal the interpretation. Perhaps Arioch thought a promotion would be in order if he could convince the king he played a crucial role in finding an answer to the dream. I think the silence of Daniel is significant for he does not batter an eyelid. He is only interested in glorifying and honoring God, not in his own interests.

We must recognize that the dream of Nebuchadnezzar and, as we will see, the interpretation, were for one specific purpose. That purpose was God’s, not Daniel’s. It was not about the deaths of wise men who were not wise at all in their occultism nor was it about saving the lives of Daniel and his friends. It is true, by their faithfulness they were saved. But the main point was that God’s plans and purposes would be revealed as to the “time of the Gentiles” and the prophetic timeline that those times would extend to. It would reveal who would be involved and what would happen after those times ended. That is why Daniel is heaping praise upon God in Daniel 2:19-23, “Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven; Daniel said, “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, For wisdom and power belong to Him. “It is He who changes the times and the epochs; He removes kings and establishes kings; He gives wisdom to wise men And knowledge to men of understanding. “It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, And the light dwells with Him. “To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, For You have given me wisdom and power; Even now You have made known to me what we requested of You, For You have made known to us the king’s matter.” (NASB) The overall point of these verses is that Daniel did not immediately jump up and rush to the king. Rather, he praised the God of heaven first for revealing the interpretation of the dream. Notice Daniel never thanks God for saving his life in the text, although we should note he does say that God has made known to him “…what we requested of You”. No doubt Daniel and his friends would not have been remiss in giving thanks for their deliverance. Notice the subtle plural injection in that sentence of Daniel’s. When he says God had made known to him (singular) “what we (plural) requested of You”, he is acknowledging the part played by Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah as they all fervently were praying to God for deliverance.

We are told the method of God revealing the interpretation was by means of a night vision. Note, it was a vision during the night and not a dream. Any one of us are capable of having a dream but to receive a vision is something that is supernatural. In other words, it is a revelation experienced by a supernatural process that is beyond our own capabilities. The only question that can be asked of a vision is – who is the author? Sadly, many so-called Christians everyday proclaim that they have received a vision from God and then go on to say what the vision was and what it means (at least to them). You can often spot these false leaders, teachers and lay people by their elaborate titles and websites. Some, however, can be much more subtle. But, if you see descriptions such as “prophet”, “apostle”, “seer”, “prince” or worse, “king” or “queen” then you can be sure these people do not represent God. They may think they follow God but by their perceived honorary titles all they are doing is attempting to heap glory and praise upon themselves instead of where it belongs. These people ignore Scriptures like 2 Timothy 3:16-17 that tell us, “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (NASB)

Deuteronomy 4:2, “You shall not add to the word which I am commanding you, nor take away from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.” (NASB)

Deuteronomy 12:32, “Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.” (NASB)

Proverbs 30:5-6, “Every word of God is tested; He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Do not add to His words Or He will reprove you, and you will be proved a liar.” (NASB)

The Bible is complete. It is sealed shut for anything else that people claim has been revealed to them. Everything we need to know is already contained in the Holy Scriptures. In fact, only what God wishes to be revealed is contained in the pages of the Bible. He is not in the business of having to add further to what is His perfect plan and purpose. Before the books of the Bible were written or completed God did use many dreams and visions, via certain individuals whom He chose, in order for those plans and purposes to be revealed. Men, carried along by the Holy Spirit, were inspired to write the words from God’s mouth. Once that process was complete (by means of the completion of the Bible) no other prophecy was, or is, required. Anything coming out of the mouth of a person now has no origin from Scripture. You can have a mountain full of objections from those who say God gave them a special word and they are His apostle or prophet, but it does not change a thing. These people are all frauds. All that has been revealed by God is in His Word.

Let us not forget, aside from the office of overseer (pastor) or deacon, a true Christian (including such offices) has one title – Servant.

Returning to the text in Daniel 2:19-23, we must be careful not to miss the content of these verses by simply giving them a cursory view. To do so we could easily miss some important content they reveal. We have already spoken of Daniel blessing God for His deliverance by revealing the mystery to him. Now let us consider each of the points listed in the passage. Some have called this text a song or hymn to God.

Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

Here Daniel was highlighting the point that he served the God of heaven. Not the dumb, blind, and deaf false gods or religion of Babylon.

Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever.

As we have mentioned, Daniel did not go rushing off to the king announcing the interpretation. He took time to bless the name of God and, by so doing, showed that the priority was in giving God all the praise. It also shows the deep knowledge of the Hebrew Scriptures, which clearly Daniel had a command of. This phrase of “Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever” was well known to Hebrews who faithfully worshipped God and, only by a thorough knowledge of the Old Testament, would Daniel have been aware of this key phrase contained in the Psalms and many other books of the Bible.

Wisdom and power belong to Him.

Daniel here acknowledges that wisdom and power belong to God alone and only He could impart wisdom to those who faithfully follow Him. God’s power highlights His Omnipotence, whose force is unlimited.

He changes the times and the epochs.

An epoch is defined as a period of time in history, or a person’s life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics. Here Daniel is voicing the fact that God is in control of everything. He is the one who directs what happens in time and space. He knows what events will occur in line with His plans and purposes. If you do not believe that God has control of such things as time then read the story of King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20 who begged God to extend his life. As a sign of God granting another fifteen years to his life, Hezekiah asks that God causes the shadow of the sun to move back ten degrees, effectively reversing the movement of the sun itself across the sky [cf. Isaiah 38:8]. Or the account in the tenth chapter of Joshua that records Joshua asking God to stop the sun and moon.

He removes kings and establishes kings.

If you thought Nebuchadnezzar became king by his own power you would be wrong. It is God who allows kings to reign and it is He who removes them (cf. Romans 13:1-17; 1 Peter 2:13-17).

He gives wisdom to men and knowledge to men of understanding.

Here Daniel was acknowledging where wisdom comes from and knowledge that is given to men of understanding. This is clearly from God and the proof of Daniel’s acknowledgment can again be found in Daniel 1:27 where Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah all received knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom.

He reveals profound and hidden things.

Daniel knows in all of the previous three years training that only God had the answers to profound and hidden things. We have already noted that Scripture is silent as to how the four young Hebrews dealt with their training in the aspects of false religion and gods. But I cannot help but imagine that if they did not argue with their teachers they probably had a good laugh back in their room at what these so-called wise men thought was truth. They knew it was only God who could reveal such things.

He knows what is in the darkness and the light dwells in Him.

It is impossible for darkness to contain God. Daniel actually tells us this by saying the light dwells in Him. Here we see God’s Omniscience which means He is all-knowing. He sees all things. He knows all things. Nothing is, or ever could be, a surprise to Him. Psalm 36:9 speaks of this light in God which enables men to see light.

God of my fathers.

This was Daniel confirming that His God was the same God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

In his final praises to God, Daniel gives thanks and praise to God who has given him wisdom and power and it is He who has given him the knowledge of the interpretation of the dream.

Now, Daniel is ready to seek out Arioch.
